How language makes you dumb – Part 2

More than a year ago in another post (How language makes you dumb) I wrote about how proficiency deficiency in a language can make you “dumb”. Language is arguably the most important communication tool one must possess in order to be able to function properly as a social being. That is why languages/cultures around the world designate people incapable of talking with labels demonstrating other problems.  With the help of Google translate I checked how some languages depict a mute person.

Arabic

أعْجَم: dumb, mute, speechless, non-Arab, speaking incorrectly, one who speaks incorrectly

Dutch

Stom: stupid, dumb, mute, silent, speechless, goofy

English

dumb: mute, stupid

Estonian

tumm: silent, mute, dumb, dead, speechless

Filipino

umid: shy, mute, speechless, diffident, timid, dumb

Hebrew

דוֹמֵם : still, inanimate, quiet, inorganic, lifeless, dumb

Bulgarian

ням: dumb, mute, silent, speechless, voiceless, still

Swedish

mållös: speechless, goalless, tongue-tied, inarticulate, dumb, mute
